History of the Antwerp Handjes
The Antwerp Handjes are an iconic regional product that has its origins in a legend about the giant Druon Antigoon. According to the legend, this giant cut off the hands of boaters who refused to pay tolls. He was eventually defeated by the Roman soldier Silvius Brabo who threw Antigoon's hand into the Scheldt. This legend inspired the shape of the Antwerp Hands.
In 1934, the Royal Association of Master Pastry Chefs of Antwerp organized a competition to create a new regional product. Amsterdam pastry chef Jos Hakker won with his design of a hand-shaped cookie made of butter - sugar - eggs - flour and shaved almonds.
Later, chocolate versions of the hands were also made including variants with marzipan and Elixir d'Anvers.
Elixir d'Anvers:
Elixir d'Anvers is an herbal liqueur produced since 1863 by the Antwerp distillery FX de Beukelaer. This liqueur made from 32 different species of plants and herbs is known for its refined taste and is still prepared according to the original recipe.
The combination of this liqueur with our dark chocolate creates a unique taste experience you won't find anywhere else.
